Hand block printed on 100% cotton sarong
A cotton sarong is one big rectangle of cloth that you tie yourself, which is why it can stand in for a skirt, a dress and a light layer in the same bag. Ours are hand block printed with natural dyes. A printer presses a carved wooden block into dye and stamps it onto the cloth, one repeat at a time. Spacing and shade shift slightly from piece to piece, and colors can look a touch different from the photos.
Size
Each piece measures about 110 x 180 cm (43 x 71 inches). Most sarongs sold in the US run roughly 70 to 77 inches long and 43 to 46 inches wide, so ours sit at the compact end of that range and pack down small.
Our sarongs for women come in one size, so there is nothing to size up or down. You adjust the fit with the knot.
How to tie a sarong
Start with the wrap held flat, then pick a style.
Skirt: to make a cotton sarong skirt, hold the long edge at your waist, wrap the cloth around you, bring the two top corners to one hip and knot them twice.
Dress: wrap the cloth around your back at chest height, bring both top corners forward and tie them behind your neck.
On the beach: for a sarong beach cover up, drape the cloth over your shoulders after a swim and knot two corners at your chest or on one shoulder.
Shawl or scarf: on a cooler evening, fold it in half lengthwise and wear it as a shawl around your shoulders or neck.
Sarongs to wear with your swimsuit
If you searched for sarong bathing suits for women or sarong swimsuits for women, note that we sell the wrap on its own. You choose the swimsuit and tie the sarong over it: a skirt over bikini bottoms, a dress over a one-piece, or a loose drape for the walk back from the water.
Beyond the beach
People shopping for beach skirts and sarongs often end up wearing the same piece in town: a skirt with a plain tank top, a scarf at the neck, or a light layer on a plane. A sarong cover up that is this large also works as a wrap on a breezy patio or a sun shield on a long walk.
Fabric and care
The fabric is 100% cotton, light and breathable. The product pages list dry clean as the care instruction for these pieces. Keep a damp sarong apart from other clothes, because natural dyes can release some color.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a sarong?
Ours measure about 110 x 180 cm (43 x 71 inches). Most sarongs run 70 to 77 inches long and 43 to 46 inches wide.
How do you tie a sarong?
For a skirt, wrap the cloth around your waist, bring the two top corners to one hip and knot them twice. For a dress, wrap it at chest height and tie the corners behind your neck.
Is cotton a good fabric for the beach?
Cotton is light and breathable, so it feels comfortable in heat. It dries more slowly than synthetic fabric, so wring it out and hang it in the shade after a swim.
Can I wear a sarong over a swimsuit?
Yes. That is the most common use. Tie it as a skirt over bikini bottoms, as a dress over a one-piece, or drape it over your shoulders.
Do you sell swimsuits?
No. This collection is wraps only, so you choose the swimsuit and tie the sarong over it.
How do I care for a block print sarong?
Follow the care instruction on the product page, which lists dry clean. Keep it apart from other clothes when damp, since natural dyes can release some color.
What is the difference between a sarong and a pareo?
They are close to the same thing. Both are a large rectangle of cloth that you wrap and tie. Pareo is the name used in the Pacific islands, and sarong is the name more common in Southeast Asia and in US shops.
Will my sarong look exactly like the photo?
Close, but not identical. Each piece is printed by hand, so spacing and shade vary slightly, and screens can show colors a little differently.
